Don’t Look Back

“I’ve spent most of my life looking back. Looking back and regretting. The school I chose not to attend. The degree I chose not to pursue. The words I chose not to say. The chances I chose not to take.

This constant looking back – what toll did it take in my life? In my family’s life? In the lives of others?

I was so busy looking back, looking back and regretting, I had very little time to be available in the present or to look ahead to the future – ahead to what God had in store.

Two years ago, when God completely turned my life upside down, God spoke these words of His to me, through the prophet Isaiah and through my husband, “Forget the former things. Do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up, do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.” (Isaiah 43:18-19)

Perceive it? At that time, I couldn’t. But I’m so grateful and blessed to be able to say, “I’m seeing it now.”

Do I know all that God has in store for me? Absolutely not. But I do know that whatever He has in store for me – it’s good!

Sometimes, God has to totally take us from everything and everyone we know to get our attention. God was saying to me, “Just look at Me. Forget the past, the anxiety, the regrets. Just look at Me.”

Today, I am forgetting the past and looking to Jesus. Do I still struggle? Absolutely. But I wouldn’t trade this last year of looking forward for all those years spent looking back.

The Apostle Paul said, “Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14)

We all make poor choices. We all make mistakes. But I am choosing to look forward – to look to Jesus, the Author and Finisher of my faith. (Hebrews 12:2) I can do nothing on my own – it’s all Him!

Won’t you join me? Forget the past. Repent and move on. Don’t hold your past against yourself – God doesn’t! Look to Him. Live for Him – fully, completely, totally abandoned to His cause, His purpose!

God is doing a new thing. And for that, I’m am forever grateful!”
