Forgiveness Can Lead to Happiness in Christ

“I am the first of 4 girls in my family, all born and raised in Jamaica. While in Jamaica, my mother gave her life to Christ. Her life led me to Christ as well.

If you know me, you know I am full of life and extremely passionate about everything in which I get involved. If I love, I love hard. If I’m playing, I play hard. This can be a bit troubling at times because I give my all in everything I do.

While growing up, I realized that I was hot-tempered – to the point that I could be very destructive to myself and others. I struggled with this for many years, feeling entitled to all the anger and bitterness I held. This caused me to have 1 failed marriage and almost a 2nd.

About a year ago, after separating from my husband, I began a journey to discover why I was so driven, why I couldn’t be satisfied with life, and most importantly, why I was so angry. There was an emptiness that seemed so hard to fill. This journey led me to Pastor Markus, who asked me one day, “Where did your daughter come from?” You see, he had always seen me with my daughter, but never my estranged husband. It seemed strange at the time, but I was already on the verge of calling Pastor Markus to see if he would pray with me. I seriously felt as if I was going crazy with all the self-inflicted hurt and pain in my life.

A month or 2 later, I called and asked for a meeting to see if I could get my daughter christened. Pastor Markus invited both my husband and me to the meeting. By that time, I was tired of fighting and rebelling. I felt wounded and just wanted peace. This was my last attempt. And then…

We had several sessions, and Pastor Markus asked me to read a book entitled, The Pursuit of Happiness. He started discipling me. He challenged my living, my beliefs, my thoughts, my very relationship with Christ.

It started taking root. I began to realize that I was bitter, harboring unforgiveness and all kinds of sin in my life. Pastor Markus and Teresa developed a devotional schedule for me to begin seriously reading the Bible to allow God to take full control of my life. I was difficult at times. I thought I was doing the right thing as a believer. I thought that nothing needed to change about me, but that everything needed to change about my husband. I thought he was the biggest problem in my life. I wanted out of my marriage.

The difference between then and now is that I have completely forgiven my husband of everything I held on to.

Things started to change. I now see that I do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers (Ephesians 6:12). While reading Scripture I began applying this to my life, and things started to seriously change! Today, my husband and I are together and closer than we have ever been.

I have more self-control over anger. In fact God is in full control of my life, and this is evident in the way I live. Truly Christ has made a huge difference in my life! For this I am forever grateful.

I am able to track my growth and maturity in Christ, both of which have an immense impact on those around me. God is a good God! I am empowered to lead a successful life in Christ. My husband and I no longer feel defeated and ashamed. We can come boldly to God’s throne of grace.”
